Arbor Day Essay Contest

2015 Arbor Day Essay Winners

In 2015 marked the 39th year of the Arbor Day Essay Contest which is open to all 5th and 6th grade students from South Dakota.  It was 141 years ago, in 1872 that J. Sterling Morton and the State of Nebraska sponsored and hosted the first ever Arbor Day.  Over one million trees were estimated to have been planted in Nebraska on that day.

The Spink Conservation District awards cash prizes to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners.  In 2015 the District had 40 students participate in this contest.  Each student that enters an essay or a poem  receives a certificate for a free dessert item from McDonald’s and a seedling tree to plant.  The 1st place winner is then sent on to be judged at the state level.

The District’s 2015 1st place winner was Sean Domke from Redfield.
